Monika Weingartner
each painting begins with intuition, shaped by the subtle resonance of colour and chance.
Monika Weingartner, born 1967 in Munich; lives and works in Lisbon and Tarifa.
My art is an invitation to experience landscapes beyond the visible – atmospheres shaped by a finely tuned colour palette, movement, and intuition. Each painting is a living moment, leaving space for thoughts and emotions.
The interaction of colours is central to my creative expression, as I strive to capture the sensation of depth and emotion. The painting process is deeply rooted in the conscious integration of chance: spontaneous brushstrokes inspire my next step, turning each phase of the work into a reflection of intuitive flow.
Painting allows me to connect with something deeper, where the act of creation itself becomes a journey rather than a destination. It is this ongoing dialogue between the canvas and my inner world that drives me forward and keeps me curious for more.

My art is an invitation.
A journey through landscapes - places that are not only meant to be seen, but to be felt.
Tokyo
1996-2001
I remember the moment I first knelt on the tatami mat; before me stood a low wooden table holding the ink stone, bearing the sheen of freshly ground ink. The scent of burnt pine rose to meet me, mingling with the still, meditative atmosphere of the room. My venerable Sumi-e master sat beside me, her movements calm and precise. With my eyes closed, I inhaled deeply and let the breath escape slowly – my breathing flowing into the movement of my hand as the brush touched the paper.
The first brushstrokes emerged in complete silence, each one an expression of concentration and devotion. It was an experience of profound connection – with nature, and with myself. The silence, the breath, and the flowing movement of the brush remain with me to this day, shaping my creative process.

Munich & Ammersee
2001-2020
Returning to Germany, I begin to explore the vitality of colour and light. I study the possibilities of acrylics and oils, inspired by the fascinating reflections on Lake Ammersee, the gently rolling landscape of the Bavarian foothills, and the ever changing seasons.

Lisbon & Tarifa
since 2020
The longing for new impressions led me to live and work between Lisbon and the Atlantic coast of southern Spain. At the Costa de la Luz, a wild, untamed nature unfolds before my eyes – constantly changing skies, powerful winds, the azure Atlantic Ocean, sweeping dunes, glowing landscapes with fire-scarred hills, and the distant outline of Africa on the horizon. These intense contrasts and the eternal interplay of the elements have shaped my work ever since.

Artistic Background
My practice is rooted in a transcultural education shaped by East Asian ink traditions and Western painting. Through continuous engagement with material, form, and pictorial space, I have developed an independent, process-driven visual language.
